We finally had an opportunity to visit Harry’s Roadhouse in Santa Fe since they offer gluten free breakfast and lunch options. So many people had told us about it, but since they serve mostly breakfast and lunch, it was generally, and regrettably so, never that enticing an option for us, since most of these choices involve gluten, and lots of it. Through the grapevine, we learned that one of the owners is celiac, and is now continuously expanding their menu offering gluten free options to their patrons. We were told that Harry’s takes every precaution to avoid cross-contamination with gluten. Of course, hearing this, we just had to check it out.
Harry’s Roadhouse is a long-time local favorite and is known for its casual atmosphere, offering great food at an affordable price. It can be a little tricky to find, since it is just outside the inner core of Santa Fe, on the Old Las Vegas Highway (see our Restaurant Page for address and phone number), which runs alongside the I-25, in Southeast Santa Fe.
When you enter the restaurant, the first dining room is on your right, reminiscent of a 1950’s diner. Straight ahead is a typical Santa Fe cafe-style room, complete with authentic Southwest furnishings. A similar decor is found in the adjoining bar and third dining room. During the summer months, outdoor dining is available on a peaceful patio behind the restaurant. They only accept reservations for large groups. Unless this applies, whatever table is free when you arrive, is what you get. We were greeted by a friendly staff who immediately provided helpful advice with regard to the gluten free options on the menu. Since we arrived just in time for lunch, we unfortunately missed the opportunity to try their gluten free breakfast waffles, muffins and other daily specials. Their menu is extensive and offers a nice selection of specialty salads, a variety of fabulous sandwiches (all are available with gluten free bread), daily lunch specials, soups, a nice selection of home-made desserts (although only a few are gluten free and options vary daily), and, of course, the usual fare of burgers and fries. Their coffee is provided by a local roaster and is a well known favorite with the locals. The three of us selected different dishes. One was the Mixed Greens with Avocado and Roasted Red Pepper Salad,
a Southwest Chop Salad, made with, black beans, bell pepper, jicama, corn, red onion, sunflower sprouts, tomato, avocado, and jalapenos, which was beautifully presented,
and a Smoked BBQ Chicken Sandwich with fries, salsa, coleslaw, and BBQ sauce, on gluten free bread.
Everything was delicious! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and our coffee was constantly being refilled. We will definitely come back and hope to try out their gluten free breakfast menu. If you are coming to Santa Fe, give this great place a try!
Everything *looks* super delicious! If I am ever in Santa fe, I will look this place up. 🙂
